12 Indoor Spots to Beat the Cold (because 10 Just Isn't Good Enough For My Peeps).
Ah, Calgary winters - the time of year when your dog gives you the “I’m going to poop inside today mmmkay?” Look while you question every life choice that led you to owning a house in a climate where the wind hurts your face, when the temps drop below -20°C, outdoor adventures become a hard pass for our short furred babies, but that doesn’t mean your pup has to be cooped up inside (or worse, zoomie-deprived).
Luckily, our city has some amazing indoor spots where you and your dog can get out of the house, stay warm, and even sneak in some enrichment. And no, I’m not just talking about doing laps around PetSmart while your dog drags you behind them as they head for the meows.
Before we dive in, a quick reminder: These places welcome well-socialized, leashed dogs. If your pup is still working on their best behaviour (no judgment—Stanley has his moments), make sure they’re under control and that you’re a responsible handler and you have a stable grip on the leash.
Now, onto the fun stuff!
1. Winners, HomeSense & Marshalls
One of the OG non-pet stores to welcome dogs! Whether you’re on the hunt for modestly priced candles you don’t need or trying to find the world’s fluffiest throw blanket, these stores are perfect for a little retail therapy with your furry shopping assistant. Stanley personally recommends HomeSense—he gets the most attention from their employees and have a HUGE pet aisle. Helpful hint for new dog experiences, Market Mall Homesense has escalators for some fun training opportunities.
2. Play Unleashed (Balzac)
This one’s a game-changer for dogs with cabin fever. Specifically the “Three Sisters” indoor/outdoor off-leash park lets your dog run wild while you keep your toes and fingers from freezing off and their tender paws warm adjacent. It’s fully fenced and private, so no surprise dog drama, just pure zoomie freedom.
3. Four Dogs Brewing
Because sometimes, you need a drink, and your dog needs a nap somewhere other than your couch. Four Dogs Brewing isn’t just dog-friendly—it’s dog-encouraged. Your pup can lounge on a cozy bed or hammock while you sip on a locally crafted brew. It’s like a dog-friendly coffee shop, but with beer. Enough said. (PS don’t be afraid of bringing you and your buddy take out).
4. Urban Barn
Who better to help you pick out a new couch than the one who’s going to claim it immediately? Urban Barn is dog-friendly, so you can browse for home decor while your pup “tests” the furniture. Don't be surprised if the staff shares a knowing smile when your pup claims their favourite cozy corner.
5. Princess Auto
For those days when you need to fix something and your loyal pup insists on getting out of the house. Princess Auto is a hidden gem. Amidst the tools and gadgets, enjoy a relaxed vibe where your dog can tag along even if they’re more interested in sniffing the out the pet aisle than the latest power drill.
6. Bass Pro Shops
Think of it as Disneyland for dogs—just with more taxidermy. Between the jerky section, the racks of plush hunting decoys, and the mystical scent trails left by a thousand flannel-clad shoppers, your pup’s nose will be working overtime. Bonus: The staff are usually dog lovers and might even sneak your pup a treat.
7. Staples
When winter bites, escape to the warm comfort of Staples. It’s not just for stationery lovers, it's a perfect retreat for you and your fur baby. While you browse for Sharpies and office supplies, Fido can enjoy an outing while you get your “business” together—a win-win for productivity and comfort.
8. Michaels
Calling all crafters! Michaels is where creativity meets enrichment. Whether you’re picking up craft supplies or just wandering the aisles, it’s a fun spot to spark inspiration. Your dog might even become your unexpected/expected muse, adding a splash of canine charm to your next masterpiece.
9. Indigo Bookstores
Want to curl up with a good book, a glass of red and your best four-legged friend but Amazon doesn’t allow dogs in their delivery trucks? With inviting reading nooks and warm, indoor vibes, it's the ideal hideaway from the chill, plus with the new online ordering app from the big S you can grab your favourite hot drink. Enjoy some literary escapism while your pup gets in on the cozy cuddle session.
10. Golden Acre Garden Centre
Craving a touch of nature without braving the cold? Or perhaps your second child (only second to Mr. Snuggle Muffin) Golden Acre Garden Centre brings the outdoors in, as well as that new plant baby smell. Plus for my humidity loving friends, your hair will look great!
Which of these indoor adventures will you and your pup explore next?
11. The Camera Store
This is the gem for dog lovers! Whether you're picking up gear (like me) or looking for a break from the downtown winds, they offer a warm pat to your dog that makes both you and your pup feel at home. It’s definitely an experience for doga who tolerate their owners who play with other dogs for a living.
12. Your Own Private Studio Session (With Yours Truly!)
Okay, shameless plug, but hear me out—if you’re already looking for an indoor adventure with your pup, why not make it extra special with a cozy studio photography session? No muddy paws, no freezing temperatures, just you, your dog, and some stunning, personality-filled portraits to remember your bond. (Bonus: Your dog will definitely get treats and belly rubs from me.)
BUUUUUT I excel in mountain adventures in the snow, so we can also wait until the weather warms up a few degrees. Think about it.
