7 Dog Friendly Patios in Calgary That Stanley Actually Endorses
You know the drill.
You pull into the parking lot, your dog immediately realizes you have arrived somewhere that smells suspiciously like food, and suddenly you are no longer walking a dog. You are being dragged toward the door by a four-legged Boxer-shaped search and rescue team.
Before I even look at the menu, I do the patio scan.
Where's the shade? Are the tables packed together like sardines? Is there somewhere for the dog to settle without being directly underneath someone's chair? Is there a water bowl? And, perhaps most importantly, does the staff greet my dog before they greet me?
Because there is a very important distinction between “dog friendly” and “dogs are tolerated here, I guess.”
These are some of my favourite dog friendly Calgary breweries (and for us wine lovers there's one of those too) where you can grab a drink, a bite, and bring your best friend along for the adventure. Because aren’t we all looking things to do around Calgary that involve your dog?
Four Dogs Brewing: My Top Dog Pick
Obviously, we have to start here.
Four Dogs Brewing is my go to dog-friendly patio and taproom recommendation. And honestly, it would be weird if it weren't. Their whole story was inspired by four rescue dogs, and dogs are welcome inside and out.
But what makes Four Dogs special isn't simply that your dog is allowed through the door. It’s that everything in the taproom has been designed around the comfort of your dog. Anchors in the wall to hold your dog, doggy beds, dog sweaters, even a small space cut out at the bar for the smaller dogs who prefer a a quieter environment.
They host paint nights, game nights, adoption events and all sorts of community shenanigans, which makes it feel much more like a gathering place than somewhere you just happen to be allowed to bring your dog.
And this one is personal for me. Four Dogs and I have raised more than $70,000 for Calgary Humane Society together through our fundraising adventures. So yes, I have a soft spot for this place. Possibly several.
Come for the beer. Stay because your dog has made six new friends.
Cold Garden: The OG Indoor Dog Brewery
Cold Garden has that wonderfully weird, vintage, eclectic aesthetic that makes you want to photograph everything before you even sit down.
There are tons of tables indoors and out, dogs are welcome, and the whole place has that casual, slightly chaotic energy that works beautifully when your dining companion has no concept of personal space.
They also have featured artists on the walls and host craft nights, so you can sip a beer, admire some art, make something with your hands and watch your dog slowly work the room for snacks.
Honestly, what more could a dog lover ask for?
Maybe a designated dog snack menu.
But we're getting there.
Citizen Brewing: Because Wind/Hail/Snow Happen
Calgary weather likes to keep us humble.
One minute you're sitting in the sunshine with your dog. The next, you're wondering if that dark cloud on the horizon is rain, hail or the beginning of winter.
Enter Citizen Brewing.
Their covered seasonal patio is dog friendly, and the heaters make it a particularly good option when the weather is doing that classic Calgary thing where it cannot commit to a season.
Bonus points because they actually have food, including the fried chicken sandwich, which is a pretty compelling reason to stay awhile.
Your dog gets patio time. You get fried chicken.
This is what I believe the founding fathers intended.
Annex Ale Project: Beer, Dogs and Empire Burgers
Annex is another favourite to relax on. Their wooden patio is spacious, comfortable and casual.
There is the very important matter of Lil' Empire Burger being right there.
Beer? Check.
Dog? Check.
Smash burger? Absolutely.
This is the kind of patio situation where you can convince yourself you're having a sophisticated afternoon out while your dog is quietly hoping you drop approximately 47 percent of your burger and fries.
VIN Room: Because Your Dog Deserves a Little Luxury Too
There are days that beer doesn’t quite hit the spot, perhaps a wine tasting flight is in order and you want something that screams “yes, my dog and I are on a date, what’s the issue?”
Perhaps you have put on actual pants. Perhaps you are feeling fancy. Perhaps your dog has spent the entire morning rolling in something questionable and therefore deserves to experience the finer things in life.
VIN Room is your wine-and-elevated-taste-buds option. Their dog-friendly patio is made even better by the fact that they offer a complimentary, a three-course treat menu for your pup. Because obviously your dog needs a hit of happy-hour luxury too.
You can have your wine and small plates. They can have their little tasting menu.
Nobody said being a dog parent wasn't glamorous.

Born Brewing: Because I Love Their Beer
Sometimes it doesn't need to get anymore complicated than the fact that you just love their beer.
Born Brewing is one of those places for me. I love their beers (Hi Cutie! is highly cravable), I love the vibe, and when the patio is calling, I'm bringing Stan the man.
Because apparently my hobbies now include craft beer, dogs and finding increasingly creative ways to justify spending an afternoon outside.
I'm not mad about it.
Leopold's Tavern: When You Want Pub Vibes
Sometimes you want a brewery. Sometimes you want wine. Most days I want wings and poutine, not so much the old ticker.
Leopold's ranks because of it's multiple locations, great daily specials, wide variety of menu options… did I already mention poutine?
It's got the casual neighbourhood pub vibe, comfort food and enough personality to make it feel like somewhere your dog could plausibly have a favourite table. And yes, patio seating is the move if you're bringing your pup.
Come for the pub vibes. Stay for the food. Let your dog judge everyone walking past.
But What Actually Makes a Patio Dog Friendly?
Here's my unofficial test.
A patio isn't genuinely dog friendly just because someone has decided dogs are technically permitted.
I want to see water bowls, shade, somewhere for them to get comfy and enough space between tables that my dog doesn't accidentally become a participant in the neighbouring table's dinner (yes it's happened, no we don't talk about it).
I love when people who work there ask to work on the patio so they can pet the dogs, who understand that the dog is not simply an inconvenience attached to my leash.
That's the good stuff.
Because dogs notice when they're welcome. So do their humans.
Now It's Your Turn
This is by no means the definitive list because Calgary has a frankly ridiculous number of places where you can enjoy a patio with your dog.
So tell me:
Which dog-friendly patio did I miss?
Drop it in the comments or send it my way. Bonus points if your recommendation has someone who immediately forgets I'm there because they are too busy making friends with my dog.
Because obviously, that's how it should be.

Looking for more dog-friendly Calgary adventures?
One of my favourite things about photographing dogs in Calgary is that the best photos rarely happen when we're trying too hard to make them happen. Sometimes it's a hike through Kananaskis. Sometimes it's a patio beer with their favourite human. Sometimes it's a post-adventure treat drive-thru where your dog has decided they personally deserve a cheeseburger.
Your dog's life is made up of all these little rituals, adventures and ridiculous moments. Those are the things worth remembering.
