You may know me as the incredibly handsome dog who still lives with his mom, Aubri.
Or as the one who carries the full emotional responsibility of this household… and also creates most of the chaos on the emotional roller coaster.

Today I’d like to talk about something important.

Why my momma is extremely lucky to have me.

I know, I know. Humans love to say they’re lucky to have their dogs. Very sweet. Very sentimental. But let’s get honest for a moment.

Let’s review the facts.

Household Health & Safety Department

First of all, I personally supervise every bite of food she eats.
Every. Single. Bite.

You’re welcome.

How else would she know if something is unsafe? Suspicious? Possibly delicious enough to require immediate sharing? I maintain constant visual monitoring. I am basically a full-time health and safety professional.

I would even go so far as to taste test everything.

Financial Wellness & Abundance Management

Then there’s her financial wellbeing.

She has this affirmation that money needs to flow in order for abundance to grow. I support this mindset by making sure her credit card stays warm and active through regular treat acquisitions.

Chews.
Toys.
Enrichment snacks.
Emergency snacks.
Backup emergency snacks.

I am deeply committed to our prosperity.

Personal Trainer & Emotional Support Division

I also make sure she gets her daily steps. Cardiovascular health matters. Fresh air matters. Movement matters. And if she ever forgets, I gently remind her by staring directly into her soul and whimpering until we go outside.

You cannot put a price on that level of personal training.

Emotionally speaking, she never has to feel alone. Not even for one second. I am always nearby. Supervising. Comforting. Leaning on her with my full body weight.

I even take up ⅞ of the bed so she doesn’t feel like the bed is too big.

Following her from room to room to ensure maximum companionship coverage.

Honestly, her quality of life has improved dramatically since I arrived.

Professional Responsibilities & Personal Sacrifice

And yes, I make sacrifices too.

For example, I have to put up with being the best dog model out there. It’s a heavy burden, but someone has to do it. Standing around looking majestic. Being charming. Turning heads. Representing the brand.

Exhausting work, really.

But let’s be honest, I do give a mean side eye 73.7% of the time so she understands the sacrifice.

I do all of this without much harrumph.

So yes.

She is very lucky to have me.

But if I’m being completely honest…

The Part She Doesn’t Fully Understand

Because the truth is… I’m the lucky one too.

She watches every little thing about me like it matters. Because to her, it does. My expressions. My moods. The way my ears move. The way I sigh when I’m comfortable. The way I look at her when I want absolutely nothing except to be close.

The way I lift my paw ever so slightly to let her know there’s a little snow stuck between my toes that needs immediate removal.

She pays attention to all of it.

The Life She Gives Me

She makes sure I’m safe. Fed. Comfortable. Fed. Understood. Fed.

She learns what I need even when I don’t know how to explain it. She celebrates my personality instead of trying to change it. Even when I am… creatively expressive.

She laughs at my nonsense. She forgives my chaos. She tells me I’m a good boy and that she loves me so often that I truly believe I am be the greatest dog who has ever lived.

She gives me a life filled with adventure, comfort, and belonging.

She makes the world feel predictable and safe, with just enough chaos to keep things interesting.

She even brings home foster dogs sometimes… which means more friends, more sniffing, more welcoming committees, and more chances to help scared hearts feel safe. She says we’re helping them find their forever homes.

I just know our home gets bigger every time another dog walks through the door.

My Person. My Pack. My Whole World.

She is my person. My home. My whole pack.

And when she looks at me, I can tell she feels lucky.

But what she doesn’t fully understand is this:

I would choose her every single day.

Out of all the humans in the entire world… she is mine. And I am hers. And that feels like the biggest win either of us could ever have.

So yes. Maybe she’s lucky to have me.

But I’m pretty sure I hit the jackpot too.

Why an On Site Veterinary Clinic Would Change Everything

This part matters, so I’m going to say it plainly.

Right now, Saving Grace relies on partner veterinary clinics for medical care. That means:

• Frequent travel
• Tight scheduling
• Emergency logistics
• And a whole lot of time and energy spent just getting animals to and from care

Some weeks require three separate trips, and that’s not even counting emergencies.

Now imagine being a sick, injured, or recovering animal and having to be transported again and again. The stress alone is heartbreaking. Add in the cost, the coordination, the staffing, and the time lost… and it’s a lot.

An on site medical clinic changes everything.

It means:

• Faster treatment
• Less stress for animals
• More efficient use of rescue resources
• Greater capacity to help more animals, sooner
• Care happens where the animals already are, in a familiar environment with consistent support

This isn’t a convenience project.
This is a capacity project.
This is how rescue work becomes more sustainable, and how more animals get the help they deserve.

There was a time I genuinely thought I was a bad dog owner.

Not in the “haha he stole a sock” way.
In the “what have I done and can I exchange this dog for store credit” way.

Stanley spent his formative years spicy.

Like… jalapeño dipped in hot sauce spicy.

His first day of daycare? He mugged all the pugs and came home with a big fat F.
Not a “needs improvement.” Not a “we’ll try again next week.”
Just: ma’am, your son chose violence.

Because every day back then felt like a stress test.
My cortisol levels were basically sponsored by Stanley.

Where can I walk Stanley (and Riley) where we won’t run into a surprise off-leash dog?
What chaos am I going to step into today? (chewed apart bingo dabber on the new rug).
Why does everyone else seem to have an easy, neutral, socially acceptable pup… and I have a gremlin with feelings? BIG feelings and mighty muscles.

Then came the opinions.

I was told I was too soft.
Then too strict.
Then not alpha enough.
Then too controlling.
To be something else entirely, but what? I'm not sure.

And if you’ve ever had a dog who’s anxious, reactive, overexcited, protective, or just generally… extra… you already know:

People love giving unsolicited advice when they don’t have to live with your dog.

At one point, I even contacted Boxer Rescue about returning him because I was terrified of the repercussions his behaviour would have on Rilëy.

That truth is uncomfortable.
But it’s part of the story.

And it matters because here’s the real kicker:

I was so focused on “fixing” Stanley that I stopped seeing him.

I stopped appreciating him for who he actually was:
Deeply loyal. Ridiculously loving. Protective.
And yes, goofy as hell.

I didn’t give myself grace for having a dog that didn’t fit someone else’s expectations or my own.
I didn’t give him the space or the tools he needed to feel safe.
And I definitely didn’t enjoy him the way I should have.

Because I was trying to have a perfect dog.

Instead of building a relationship with my dog, I cared about what strangers thought of us.

Then something shifted.

Instead of asking, “How do I make him listen?”
I started asking, “What is he trying to tell me?”

Instead of worrying about side eye at the park,
I started paying attention to the way he looked to me for guidance… or didn't, remember it wasn't perfect, and it still isn't.

That soft, trusting, “you’re my person” gaze.

And now?

Stanley is “perfect.”

Perfect to me.
Perfect for me.
Perfect in the way that matters.

And to him? I’m perfect too.

Which is honestly hilarious, because I am a human disaster with a camera and a Temu addiction… but okay Stan, love you too.

The point is:
The only relationship that matters is yours.

Not the people at the dog park.
Not the internet.
Not the unsolicited commentary from a man holding a retractable leash like it’s a personality trait.

Just you and your dog.

And one day, sooner than any of us want, what you’ll miss won’t be perfect leash skills or whether they “behaved.”

You’ll miss:

• the way they just NEED to be touching you
• the chaos zoomies
  
• the head tilt
  
• the little bean pressed into taking up the whole king sized bed
• the way they chose you again and again
  

That’s what I photograph.

Not performance.
Not perfection.
Not “sit and stay while I bribe you with cheese.” (Well there is that too).

Connection.

What if my dog is reactive or anxious around other dogs or people?
You are in the right place. I photograph a lot of spicy, sensitive, reactive, and anxious dogs and I plan sessions accordingly. Calgary and Southern Alberta are full of stunning, under-the-radar spots where we can wander around and not see a soul. Bless.
We will choose a location and time that keeps your dog feeling safe, set expectations that match your dog, and work at their pace. This is dog-first pet photography in Calgary, not a reality show where strangers get a vote.

Where do dog photo sessions happen in Calgary?
Anywhere your dog will be comfortable. That is the whole point.
If your dog hates noise and chaos, we are not hanging out downtown at noon like it is a personal challenge. But if your dog thrives in quieter areas, Calgary has so many beautiful parks and natural spaces that are wildly underutilized and extremely photogenic.
And if you are up for it, I also photograph dogs and their people in Kananaskis, Canmore, Bragg Creek, and Drumheller because some relationships deserve a road trip.

My dog can’t be off leash. Is that a problem?
Perfect. This is totally normal and relatable.
Your dog does not need to be off leash for a beautiful session. Most of the dogs I photograph are on leash unless they have 130% recall and even then I am still a safety-first gremlin.
We use a simple leash setup, I photograph in a way that minimizes distractions, and anything that needs to disappear in the final artwork can be edited out. Safety for your dog, safety for everyone, and still gorgeous finished images.

What if I don’t know what to do with the photos after?
That is exactly why I offer no-pressure ordering guidance. You do not need to know what you want before your session and you do not need to guess what will look good on your walls.
I will help you choose the images that feel most like you, then guide you through print sizes, wall art options, and what works best for your home. You get an elevated, down-to-earth experience and finished artwork that actually gets enjoyed instead of living on a hard drive forever.

Do you work with rescue dogs and senior dogs?
Yes. Rescue dogs and senior dogs have my whole heart. If your dog has a special story, a spicy past, or is slowing down, we will plan a session that honours who they are right now, with comfort and emotional safety at the centre.

How far in advance should I book a session?
If you are hoping for spring and summer dates, earlier is better because weekends fill first. If your dog is aging or you have had a health scare, reach out anyway. I will always do my best to make room when it matters most.

I’m done creating work just trying to feed the algorithm machine. I’m done with high volume photography just to be “busy.” And I’m definitely done with quick wins that look good for five minutes and disappear into the void (along with my soul).

Dogs feel energy. You already know this.

If we show up rushed, trying to squeeze magic into a tiny window and forcing poses, the dog knows. If we show up calm, grounded, and with room to breathe, the dog knows that too. And the photos always reflect it.

Giving back through rescue and fundraising work has always been a personal core value and huge part of my business. That hasn’t changed, and it never will.

What has changed is where I’m focusing my energy.

By narrowing my efforts, I can show up more consistently, more sustainably, and with more care for the causes that matter most to me. That focus allows me to create better work, avoid burnout, and keep supporting dogs in ways that actually make an impact.

About mini sessions and what I am offering instead

You won’t see traditional mini sessions here anymore.

Not because they’re bad. They absolutely have a place, and for some people they’re exactly what they want. They just no longer align with how I want to work or what I value creatively.

My work has grown into something different.

With my very real squirrel brain, repeating the same background, the same poses, and trying to pull magic out of a 15-minute window just isn’t where I do my best work. I’m far more interested in experiences where dogs are given time to settle, people can relax, and we can create something that actually feels like your life together, not a rushed moment squeezed into a crowded schedule.

Curated Sessions are my guided photography option for busy people who want beautiful artwork without extra meetings, endless planning, or decision fatigue.

This is a shorter, streamlined experience, but it still ends in the same way all my sessions do: with timeless artwork and images you actually treasure, and a process that feels easy to say yes to.

After we shoot, we will review your images the same day and we will place your artwork order while everything is still fresh and exciting. Same day viewing and ordering is only part of Curated Session experiences and it is perfect for busy people who want ease, clarity, and momentum without sacrificing meaning.

A new way to adventure: Summit Sessions

For people who would rather be in hiking boots than heels

This is the heart of 2026.

Summit Sessions are all-day adventures designed for people who actually want to do something with their dog, not just show up, smile, and leave. We explore, we wander, we take our time, and somewhere in the middle of all that, art happens.

These sessions are limited to two per month because of the time requirement, energy, and care - they deserve to be treated like something special. (Also, I would like to remain on speaking terms with my knees.)

Artwork is the main event

Digital images are not going anywhere. Take a deep breath.

What is changing is that artwork is now the center of the experience. Artwork is what lives with you. On your walls. On your coffee table. In your actual life. Not in a folder you promise yourself you will organize and print someday.

When artwork is ordered, digital files are included so you can have both.

I have refined my product guide to focus on pieces I genuinely love and feel proud offering. Albums, wall art, collections, and a few thoughtful add ons. You will never be left alone to figure this out. I walk you through everything during your ordering appointment and you can see and touch samples in the studio before making decisions.

P.S. I have an client office and studio now

Pinch me, it’s true

This still feels a little surreal, but yes, I officially have a client office and studio.

It’s located inside Sleep Rover Doggie Hotel and Daycare, which means two very excellent things:

1. Our viewing session can happen in a comfy, dog-friendly space where you can see artwork samples in person and make decisions calmly, not at midnight alone on your phone under the covers.
   (Also, I will not be sweating through my shirt because I panic-cleaned my house like I was about to be featured on an episode of Hoarders. Everyone wins.)
   
2. I’ll be offering select daycare add-on sessions exclusively for Sleep Rover clients on specific session dates.
   

To book a daycare add-on session, your dog must be a Sleep Rover client and booked into daycare that day. Details and dates will be shared as they come up.

Mostly though, this space feels like a big, grounding step forward. A home for the work. A place to slow things down even more.

Big Hearts, Big Impact

I’m sitting here feeling like my heart grew three sizes, Grinch style, after getting the final numbers from this month’s rescue dog fundraising. I knew we did well, but I didn’t realize just how much this community showed up for this Calgary dog photographer and our local rescues until today.

In the last few weeks alone, we raised fifteen hundred dollars for Boxer Rescue Canada through the Christmas fundraiser. The Sleep Rover daycare add on sessions brought in another three hundred forHeaven Can Wait Animal Rescue Foundation, and on Saturday the thirteenth, I’ll be popping up with a photobooth for BARCS at Four Dogs Taproom to raise even more funds.



Three different rescues supported in one month. Three different groups of dogs who get a little more help because this community showed up big. Thank you. Really. Thank. You!

Some of my favorite images were snapped mid-squirrel chase, during a surprise flop into a lap, or in that split second of pure joy that no human could ever stage.

Most photographers overlook one thing: dogs are feelers. If we want them to show up authentically, we have to do the same. That’s why I don’t just snap a few frames, bounce and send an email link with your photographs. I want to take the time to connect, to build a relationship and take care of the things that busy people like yourself don't have time to do for themselves. That comfort and trust shows up in every photo.

One of my favorite images came from a little boy who stopped mid-session to have a quiet moment with his dog. No posing. No rushing. Just time, patience, and authenticity gave us a photo I now consider priceless. That’s the kind of art I'm here for.

I don’t run sessions on the clock. We go until we get the good stuff, candid glances, goofy zoomies, snuggles that make your heart thud. If a dog’s having a tough day or feels off, we pause. I never thought I was living on borrowed time with my soul dog, Roxie. I figured she was just slowing down after having her some of her teeth removed and a lump taken off her paw. Because Our Dogs Deserve the Best

As many of you know, I recently closed a massive chapter of my life, 22 years as a flight attendant. I grew up with my colleagues, watched their families grow, and witnessed every CEO of that company come and go. My last flight was from Dublin to Calgary, on the exact date of my hire 22 years ago. Call it manifestation, kismet, or just really poetic scheduling.

Now, as I emBARK on my newest adventure full-time dog photography (and yes, I still bring snacks for my passengers, they are just in the form of dehydrated meats now) plus the fact that September is my birthday month and fall is my favorite season, and honestly, I couldn’t think of a better time to celebrate.

12 Indoor Spots to Beat the Cold (because 10 Just Isn't Good Enough For My Peeps).

Ah, Calgary winters - the time of year when your dog gives you the “I’m going to poop inside today mmmkay?” Look while you question every life choice that led you to owning a house in a climate where the wind hurts your face, when the temps drop below -20°C, outdoor adventures become a hard pass for our short furred babies, but that doesn’t mean your pup has to be cooped up inside (or worse, zoomie-deprived).

Luckily, our city has some amazing indoor spots where you and your dog can get out of the house, stay warm, and even sneak in some enrichment. And no, I’m not just talking about doing laps around PetSmart while your dog drags you behind them as they head for the meows.

Before we dive in, a quick reminder: These places welcome well-socialized, leashed dogs. If your pup is still working on their best behaviour (no judgment—Stanley has his moments), make sure they’re under control and that you’re a responsible handler and you have a stable grip on the leash.

I recently posted a photograph of a cute schnauzer in Reykjavík, Iceland which lead me to wanting to share an interesting fact about the city. What I discovered was that the capital of fire and ice had banned dogs for almost 60 years. Surprising, but if you know me... i had to dig a bit deeper and what I found was a bit unsettling.

Reykjavík once banned domesticated canine companions for 60 years, allowing only branded, working farm dogs in the area. The ban was enforced due to an outbreak of Echinococcosis, a tapeworm that could be transmitted from dogs to humans. Thus, my journey down the rabbit hole continued... hidden in newspaper articles of that era is the reality that many dogs were shot/killed on sight and buried (a procedure for the tapeworm epidemic) an aspect of history that is often overlooked. While the ban was relaxed in 1984 to allow for special exemptions, it wasn’t until 2007 that it transitioned to a permit-based system rather than a strict prohibition.

It’s hard not to see echoes of this past in today’s crisis in Turkey, where new laws targeting stray animals have been passed under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In Turkey, stray animals have long held a special place in the culture, celebrated as street companions and treated with affection by the people (fed, sheltered and citizens even coming together to pay for veterinary expenses). But now, under a law passed in July 2024, all strays must be brought to shelters, vaccinated, and, if they exhibit any signs of terminal illness or aggression, euthanized. Dogs that remain healthy and adoptable have just 30 days to find homes-that is if they fall under an "acceptable breed" (this is a whole different post).

To understand the public sentiment on this issue, a recent Metropoll survey found that only 2.7% of Turkish respondents support euthanasia as a solution. Yet, the law was still approved with 275 votes in favor and 224 against.

Historically, Turkey has had progressive legislation to protect animals. In 2004, a general animal protection law was enacted, which covered everything from animal use in biomedical research to the management of stray animals. Notably, Article 6/4 mandated that stray dogs be returned to their capture site after sterilization and vaccination, while Article 7/1 required municipalities to implement local management strategies for stray dogs. Then, in 2021, a new law further advanced protections by redefining animals as living beings instead of commodities, mandating microchipping of pets, and requiring sterilization of homeless animals.

Despite these strides, the most recent law feels like a reversal of Turkey’s progress on animal welfare. Turkish shelters are already under immense strain, unable to accommodate the estimated 4 million stray animals in the country, with only 322 shelters nationwide capable of holding around 105,000 animals. It's reported that shelter dogs had only 2 square meters per dog on average, meaning overcrowding and as most of us know - overcrowding leads to the quick spread of disease and health issues.

Erdogan's new law has been met with resistance. Turkey's Republican Party, which opposes Erdogan’s party, has publicly refused to enforce the law in several major cities, even though mayors who do not comply could face up to two years in prison. This political tension has led to suspicions that Erdogan’s law may serve as a way to undermine and reduce opposing parties under the guise of public safety.

What’s deeply disturbing are reports of the inhumane methods used for euthanasia in some areas, which go far beyond what most would consider humane. Videos and photos have surfaced, showing animals being put into mass pit graves, and stories have emerged of animals suffering painful deaths through methods such as strangulation, beatings, and even being put into these pits still alive await burial, rumours have surface that animals have been tortured prior to slaughter to add to the brutality of this.

It’s heartbreaking to see such cruelty in a time when we have humane methods to handle stray populations. More importantly, with time, care, and commitment to ethical practices, dogs can be rehabilitated. Yes, public safety is paramount, and I have great sympathy for families affected by stray animal incidents, but there must be a more compassionate solution. Culling has proven ineffective in the past, reducing numbers on the short term, but, leading to re-population/reproduction from the remaining animals and lack of enforcement on licensing, and sterilization.

the little voice in the back of my head is always saying, no one is going to pay you to do this for a living, are you crazy? who would invest this much in their dogs outside of yourself? ever hear of a starving artist?

well folks... let me answer those questions for you (and partly for my own self soothing). let's talk about that little dirty subject that everyone loves to hate talking about: money.

first off, we are creating and curating memories.

hey, I get it - a great selfie is a great selfie and i'm all for #ButFirstLetMeTakeASelfie. my camera roll on my phone also has 92.8% dedicated to my dogs. here's the thing; i know pet behavior, i have my own camera so we can be further than arms length away, my camera won't capture those wonky areas between the dogs ears and face that are in focus even when you're in portrait mode (you know what i mean), i also have a tickle-trunk full of tools and tricks to get your fur face's attention and capture their personality. i guess i should also mention that i have A LOT of experience with taking photos of dogs and a degree in photography (think composition, lighting, mad editing skills, positioning/posing).

the unfortunate part of owning a pet of the furry form is that they don't tend to spend too much time here on earth with us. the heartbreak is real, trust me i'm very familiar with it and it's counterpart grief. i have had clients reach out to me to capture end of life sessions, or clients who have regrettably missed the window for even end of life sessions.

now, i'm not saying the above sessions aren't important or meaningful. but, when i think about the loss of my pets, i want to remember them at their peak. what this means to me is showcasing their joy, vitality, personality, loyalty and affection. recently i had a scare with Riley, she was diagnosed with stage 3 arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) which, simply put is heart failure and notoriously common in boxers. when we were sitting at the emergency vet so many thoughts went through my mind. an obvious one as a photographer was at the forefront - we haven't done family photos in a very long time. you can bet your sweet life that the first thing i did when we got the all clear was book in a session. i cannot imagine the anguish i would have felt if god forbid something happened to my baby girl before this.

her emergency vet bills cost me several thousand dollars, and her on going care is no laughing matter to my pocket book either. investing $1000 to have those keepsake memories doesn't seem like a whole lot compared the the cost of keeping her with us. even more so - seeing our story displayed in my home everyday just melts my little ice cold heart.
