7 Dog Friendly Patios in Calgary That Stanley Actually Endorses

You know the drill.

You pull into the parking lot, your dog immediately realizes you have arrived somewhere that smells suspiciously like food, and suddenly you are no longer walking a dog. You are being dragged toward the door by a four-legged Boxer-shaped search and rescue team.

Before I even look at the menu, I do the patio scan.

Where's the shade? Are the tables packed together like sardines? Is there somewhere for the dog to settle without being directly underneath someone's chair? Is there a water bowl? And, perhaps most importantly, does the staff greet my dog before they greet me?

Because there is a very important distinction between “dog friendly” and “dogs are tolerated here, I guess.”

These are some of my favourite dog friendly Calgary breweries (and for us wine lovers there's one of those too) where you can grab a drink, a bite, and bring your best friend along for the adventure. Because aren’t we all looking things to do around Calgary that involve your dog?

People often ask why I photograph dogs.

The short answer?

Because of one little white puppy named Roxie.

She was the kind of dog that quietly changes the direction of your life without either of you realizing it at the time.

Every July, I think about her a little more than usual. It's the month I lost her, and while the ache has softened over the years, it's also a reminder that everything I do today started with her.

Roxie was perfection.

She had one brindle ear, one brindle eye patch, the floppiest, softest ears you've ever felt, and the sweetest little smushy face. She looked exactly like The Poky Little Puppy from the Little Golden Book.

When You Wish Time Would Slow Down

Seven years.

Seven years of nubby tail wiggles, muddy adventures, camping trips, hiking trails, couch cuddles, approximately zero respect for personal space (for me or him? You'll never know), and making me laugh every single day.

Stanley isn't just my dog. He's my best adventure buddy and, dare I say it, my rock. I know. It's cliché. But so is saying your dog changed your life, and here we are.

Every year on his birthday, I make him a homemade birthday cake because, let's be honest, if anyone deserves to be completely spoiled, it's the guy whose full-time job is supervising me while I work and aggressively reminding me when it's dinner time.

My name is Stanley. Genuine goodest boi, connoisseur of off-leash parks, and the most handsome regular at several of Calgary's finest establishments. These are my recommendations. You're welcome.

I have been in and around the rescue world for over 20 years. I have fostered dogs who arrived shaking and wouldn't leave their kennel, and left tail-wagging without a single look back at me on their way to their forever home. Rude, but okay. I have driven across Alberta because a dog needed help. I have donated, volunteered, advocated, and cried in my car more times than I care to admit because a dog I loved went back into a system that wasn't ready for them.

And most times I've learned the hard way, that not all rescues are created equal.

This series is not a takedown. It is an education. Because the Calgary animal rescue world is full of extraordinary people doing extraordinary work with extraordinary dogs, and it is also has a small bubble of organizations that have lost the plot somewhere between good intentions and ego, burnout, and power. Two things can be true at the same time.

The animals always pay the price when that happens. And so do the people who give their hearts to it.
